Ben Kilham Presentation on Black Bears May 17

Saturday, May 17, 2025 - 2:00pm05/17/2025 6:00pm Ben Kilham Presentation on Black Bears May 17 The Social Black Bear: What Bears Have Taught Me About Being Human Where: Montpelier Library, 135 Main St, Montpelier, VT 05602 When: Saturday May 17th 2pm Ben Kilham holds a Ph.D and is a wildlife biologist based in Lyme, New Hampshire. His love of and devotion to black bears has enabled him to study their habits and interact with them for more than two decades. He has accepted orphaned bear cubs at his NH facility and enabled them to successfully return to the wild. His presentation will offer the audience a unique inside look at the lives of black bears. Often thought to be solitary, black bears have a different type of social behavior that possibly parallels early human behavior. They show evidence of altruism and a mix of intentional and emotional communication. Bears can live for as many as forty years, which allows them long-term benefits from forming relationships. Ben has been the focus of several news articles and documentaries, including National Geographic's A Man Among Bears and Animal Planet's Papa Bear. He is also author of the books Among the Bears: Raising Orphaned Cubs in the Wild and Out on a Limb: Origins of Intuition and Intelligence. Free event sponsored by Protect Our Wildlife.
